Episode 42: 1+1+1=4 (Step 1 – Adopt a Success Mindset)

Adopt a Success Mindset

In this episode, we will discuss the concept of 1+1+1=4 and its individual components that when added up will be greater than the sum of the individual parts.

  1. Adopt a Success Mindset
  2. Build a Bulletproof Routine
  3. Think Like a Wealthy Person
  4. Take the Stairway to Success

Today, we are going to talk about the first step in 1+1+1=4 which is Step 1 – Adopt a Success Mindset.

A success MINDSET is key to everything in your life; it must be applied in all areas of your life (personal, professionally, socially) in order to be successful.

Mindset drives your actions and your actions dictate your results.  What stops people from a positive mindset is FEAR; we all have fears and belief systems inside of us that keep us from having a solid mindset.

When you look at yourself in a mirror, who do you see?  Do you see a success or a failure?   Do you see anything of value?  Do you see potential?  If you don’t address the fears and belief systems you are holding deep inside, your image of yourself leads to a mindset that will dictate failure versus success.

The biggest obstacle in your mindset is you.   Tragedy and failures impact all of us that can lead to a negative mindset.  We have a choice to change our mindset right here, right now.

To give you an idea, I was molested as a child by my aunt who is serving 144 years in prison for these actions and others; I went through a horrific 5-year divorce that cost me time with my son, drained me financially and almost cost me my consulting business.

But what I learned is a positive mindset is not for the select few as many believe but simply for those who never quit, for those who put one foot in front of the other every day.

To illustrate how to Adopt a Success Mindset, I will use the word ICON to help illustrate how you can create and adopt the right mindset.  I use the word ICON because I want you to be believe you can be your own ICON to yourself and those around you.

A positive mindset applied daily is key to your future success; you MUST use it every day in every aspect of your life.

SO, LET’S START WITH THE LETTER I IN ICON WHICH STANDS FOR the FIRST TENENT OF ADOPTING A SUCCESS MINDSET WHICH IS: IMAGE IS EVERYTHING.

First step in changing your mindset is adopting the right image in how you dress, speak, write and act on a daily basis.  Image is the foundation on which so much of your mindset rides on.

Build your image for that person you want to be in your future not who you are today; if you begin to dress the part, act the part, talk the part and communicate the part every day, you will become it, believe me, I am a great example of what can be achieved with limited capabilities.

So, take a step back right now to assess your current image (physical fitness, dress, communication written and spoken) and determine if it’s in line to meet the future YOU that you want to be.

Let’s do a simple exercise; think of the following people:   NAVY Seal, athlete, banker, doctor, consultant, construction worker, etc.

What image do you see of each in your mind on how they dress, talk, write, act, physically look, etc.?  How does your image need to change to be who you want to be in the future?

You were probably able to quickly build an image of each person; now let’s take a minute to do the same for who you want to be in the future.

Build an image of how you need dress, talk, write and act as the future YOU.  Then start acting today on that image to change your mindset because once your mind begins to act on changing you, you are changing your life.

SO, LET’S MOVE ON TO THE SECOND LETTER IN ICON, THE LETTER C WHICH STANDS FOR THE SECOND TENENT IN ADOPTING A SUCCESS MNDSET WHICH IS CONSISTENCY IN EVERYTHING YOU DO.

Are you consistently consistent or consistently inconsistent?  Most people are consistently inconsistent.  Most people I discuss this with will say the reason I am not reaching my goals is I am not consistent; I will in turn say no you are consistently inconsistent.

You must develop and consistently execute a sound daily routine that will ensure you complete daily, weekly and monthly tasks that will take you on the right road to achieve your goals and objectives.

My belief is you must consistently GRIND OUT a bulletproof routine every day, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to move one foot in front of the other and make progress.

Routine is the big difference maker between successful people and the coulda, woulda shoulda group of people; even if you can only achieve 50% of your daily routine every week, you will find that you have made progress that you could have never imagined over a few months or a year.  Each positive task completed builds upon itself and changes who you are in so many different ways.

THE THIRD LETTER IN ICON, IS THE LETTER O, WHICH STANDS FOR THE THIRD TENANT OF ADOPT A SUCCESS MINDSET WHICH IS OVERACHIEVE IN EVERYTHING YOU DO.

To make dramatic changes in your life requires overachieving in everything you do.  I believe dramatic times call for dramatic overachieving.

Some people tell me working to be an overachiever is ridiculous and places too much pressure on people.  Well, first I honestly don’t believe most of us know what real pressure is really like and secondly I use the saying: “ Shoot for the Stars Because if you Only get to the Moon , it isn’t so Bad.

The majority of people are afraid of their true potential, of the person inside of them who has more potential than they know and who can achieve goals beyond their wildest dreams.

THE LAST LETTER OF ICON IS THE LETTER N WHICH STANDS FOR THE LAST TENANT OF THE ADOPT A SUCCESS MINDSET WHICH IS NEVER GIVE UP.

In what I have personally gone through life, I can see where my life could have gone in many different directions if I had quit and let my feelings of feeling sorry for myself take over and wash every positive cell out of my body but I didn’t.

I never lost sight of the image of the future person I wanted to be: Great Father, Great Husband, Good Person, Being Physically Fit, Be a Successful Entrepreneur/CEO, Be a Philanthropist, etc.

I had days where I was at the end of the rope financially during my divorce or the time I thought of taking my son and running off instead of losing custody, etc.  But I consistently replaced my negative mindset with who I knew could be and never quit.  I achieved the image I had imagined.

One of the most important lessons I learned from running marathons is that you never look back on where you have been; you take one step at a time to get to the finish line.  There were times when all I could think of was run to the next stop sign, now the next bus stop and in the end you cross the finish line.

As I have gotten older and wiser, I have always wanted to live my life in a manner that if God calls me back, I know I have done everything I can to build a life that has fulfilled me and paid it forward to those around me today and into the future.

Be the ICON in your life, your partners eyes, your childrens eyes, your family’s eyes, your friend eyes and everyone around you. Adopt the mindset of an ICON can and it will change your life for GOOD!
